Instruction

Create in me a pure heart, O God,

and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Psalm 51:10

The psalmist, who is King David, is asking the loving and merciful God of all to create a perfectly clean heart in him, and to feed and grow his own heart in the Lord.

Create means "make completely new, and sustain". This is the same word used by God in the account of when He created the world in Genesis 1:1.

Pure, means, "to be bright, clean, unadulterated, uncontaminated, fully innocent, holy, moral".

Heart, refers to the center of your being. The Hebrew is used for the feelings, the will and even the intellect.

God, means Elohiym (pronounced el-o-heem). This is the plural form of God, referring to the Trinity. The Trinity is made up of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Elohiym means the Supreme God, the mighty and powerful God Who is Judge. He is the One to Whom we are accountable for all of our thoughts, words, and actions.

Putting them together, "Make and keep in me a new and bright, clean, fully innocent, and holy center of my being. May my feelings, will, and intellect be pure! O Supreme God, Mighty and Powerful Judge over all, I depend upon You to do this, please. For I am accountable to You for all of my thoughts, words, and actions."

Psalm 51 NKJV

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your loving kindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against You, and You only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Your sight-- That You may be found just when You speak, and blameless when You judge.

Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me. Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, and in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom.

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me hear joy and gladness, that the bones You have broken may rejoice. Hide Your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your holy spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me by Your generous Spirit. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners shall be converted to You.

Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Your praise. For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart-- These, O God, You will not despise.

Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem. Then You shall be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then they shall offer bulls on Your altar.

Instruction of Psalm 51

The writer of Psalm 51 is King David. King David is the one who slew the giant Goliath when he was young (1 Samuel 17, especially 17:45). This is one of seven Psalms of repentance.  (Psalm 6,32,38,51,102,130,143)

David wrote this psalm after he had committed adultery with Bath Sheba. Soon afterwards David had her husband, Uriah, killed. In doing this David had wronged himself, Bath Sheba, her husband, and Israel. However, David realized that his greatest harm was done against the Lord God Almighty. David also realized that He had broken every one of the Ten Commandments. In light of this understanding, King David of Israel wrote Psalm 51, seeking forgiveness from the Lord.

The instruction listed below is personalized for your relationship with the Lord God, just as David had written it.  Hyperlinks are given for definitions.

51:1 -Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your loving kindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.

I implore You and ask You God for favor to forgive me even while I know I am unworthy of it. I ask You to grant me forgiveness even though I know that I do not deserve it. I understand and trust that You O God are merciful and full of compassion. I trust that You have all that I needed of Loving-Kindness. My God, I expect Your attitude of goodness and steadfast love to come to me, a creature of sin. I know that You have a multitude, or thousands upon thousands, of tender mercies, and I depend upon them for You, the Lord, to erase totally my sins and thoughts, words and actions which go against what You, O God choose.

51:2 -Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

Lord, wash me completely from the wickedness, vanity, pride, perverseness, depravity, crooked, and lawlessness of my own behavior and thoughts. I rightly trust that only You God can remove them and clean me on the inside, spiritually as well as mentally, emotionally….

51:3 -For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.

I know that I act selfish and proud. I allow my pain and feelings guide my actions into hurting others and myself. Because I know this, I often feel and think that what I have done and am doing is bad!

51:4 -Against You, and You only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Your sight-- That You may be found just when You speak, and blameless when You judge.

I realize that it is You, God, alone Whom I am truly offending!! You see all that I do, think and feel. You know my reasons and motives and You see rightly and judge clearly since You are without fault and are totally perfect and blameless. I have done everything by my own free will, and I accept the blame for all of my own thoughts and actions.

51:5 -Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me.

Look and consider, Lord. I know that I was born with sin on my soul already! (Romans 5:12-14)

51:6 -Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, and in the hidden part You will make me to know Wisdom.

Look and think with me Lord, You want purity in my soul, heart, mind and body. Because of this, You will teach me and reveal to me in my spirit Your wisdom of how I should be.

51:7 -Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Father God, clean me completely! Clean thoroughly my soul, mind, spirit and emotions!! I know that if You sprinkle your Atoning Blood over my, I will be clean. If you wash me in the Blood of the Lamb, the Lord Jesus Christ, I shall be whiter than anything! (Exodus12: 22, Hebrews 9:22, Hebrews Chapters 9-11)

51:8 -Make me hear joy and gladness, that the bones You have broken may rejoice.

Lord, have me able to hear the Joy and Gladness that is of You and Your Salvation!! I know that You have broken my spirit with sadness at the offences which I have done against You. (Hebrews 12:4-11) My contrite heart needs Your healing, for You alone can heal the pain in my heart! Nothing and no One else can fill the hole and emptiness and void that is within me!  (See Beatitudes)  May the innermost parts of me now rejoice and be so very happy to be forgiven and in a right relationship with You!! May I rejoice in being reconciled in friendship and relationship with You, O Lord!

51:9 -Hide Your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

Lord, I am so ashamed of my sins, I regret that I ever did them. I want You to never see them. Please hide Your face from them! Lord, please wipe them away, erase them, make it like they never happened.

51:10 -Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Make a new heart in me, My God! Create it out of Your Pureness! (2 Cor. 5:17) Make my heart brand new so that it is totally pure and without any thing bad. Dear God, make a new and faithful spirit inside of me. Give me Your Holy Spirit that I may be faithful to You in all things!! (John 3:1-21) Have my heart stick to You no matter what comes my way!!

51:11 -Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

Lord, do not throw me away from Your Love and Friendship and Your being with me! Do not abandon me to myself. Do not take away Your anointing of the Holy Spirit from me. I want You to be with me now, always and forever! You are life itself, and to be without You is too sad for me to bear. Do not toss me away from Yourself.

51:12 -Restore to me the joy of Your Salvation, and uphold me by Your generous Spirit.

Give me the joy of Your freedom from sin, freedom from wickedness, freedom to Love You in Spirit and in Truth!! Bring me to the great happiness of being with You in my heart!! Hold me up by your gracious and bountiful Holy Spirit! Let me feel Your Holiness around me! Keep me in You by Your Holy Spirit.

51:13 -Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners shall be converted to You.

Lord, If you clean my heart and place Your Holy Spirit within me, I will teach all other sinners Your ways. I will teach everyone who walks apart from You the Way they should go. I will show them and teach them how You want them to be. Then sinners will be changed to loving and serving You. Sinners will have a change of heart like I have. Sinners will turn away from wickedness and will walk in Your Holy Light. People who live without You will be saved from the destruction where they are headed because I will teach them Your ways. Transgressors will trust Y'eshua or Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and be filled with the Holy Spirit.  Isaiah 55:8

51:14 -Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness.

Set me free from the evil I feel in my heart. I feel dirty because of what I have done. (David repents of having Uriah, Bath Sheba's husband, killed. What sins have you done which make you feel dark and ugly inside? The Lord wants you to say them to Him with a heart that is so sad that it wishes it had never done them.) God of all, You alone are the God who is able to save me from destruction. Please save me from my own disaster. My tongue shall sing out loud for all to hear of Your Holiness and Righteousness.

51:15 -O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Your praise.

Lord God, with my pure mouth that You have cleaned, I will praise You aloud from my sincere heart!

51:16 -For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering.

God, I know that You do not want dead animals. You are not happy with burnt animals offered to You. If You wanted them, then I would give them to You.  (Romans 12:1,2; Hebrews 13:15,16)

51:17 -The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart-- These, O God, You will not despise.

God, You want my broken spirit to mold and do with as You Will. You want my heart sincere and malleable in Your Hand. (Isaiah 64:8; Romans 9:21) You will not hate and turn away from my heart which trusts in You. You desire me to be submissive to Your Ways and Your Will for the purpose of Your Glory and for the purpose of my unending joy and hope. (See Beatitudes)

51:18 -Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem.

Do good for your own pleasure and delight to Zion, Lord God. Strengthen and fortify Jerusalem morally and physically. Build up Israel for Your own delight. Then You, Elohiym, will enjoy the sacrifices of the righteous and Your temple will delight You with Righteous worship.

51:19 -Then You shall be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then they shall offer bulls on Your altar.

After You have built up Israel in Your Ways, O Lord, You will be happy with their offerings. When Israel has their heart trusting in You, they shall offer bulls on Your altar for Your pleasure!

Application:  How is it with you? Is your heart a place of devastation, or is it strong and glowing with the Lord's presence?

Are you moved with great sadness at the loss of God in your heart? Do you long for Him to fill you with His Peace (John 14:27) and Joy (John 15:11) and Love (John 15:9,10).

If you need the Lord, know that it is within God's desire and will for you to ask for Him to be your Lord and Savior. He wants to dwell within you, but you need to invite Him to enter in. Scripture is clear that He calls us (1 Cor 1:9, Gal 5:13; Col 3:15; 2 Thess 2:14; 2 Tim 1:9; 1 John 3:1) and chooses us (John 15:16; 1 Peter 2:9). Won't you pray like David did?  Prayer
