Commandments VI, VII

Commandment VI.

You shall not murder.

According to God, "Murder" means acting in anger (a bad feeling caused by injury, pain, rejection, jealously, mistreatment or opposition), hate (strong dislike) and killing (the stopping of life) a person. God tells us much in detail about murder.

Anger        Hate        Killing        Origin    Remedy

Anger:     Matthew 5:21-26 - Jesus tells us "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment…But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell."

Hate    1John 3:15 - Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him." Gal 5:20, Rev 21:8.

Kill another person:     Genesis 9:6 - God says that "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man".

satan is the original murderer: John 8:44 - Jesus said to those who opposed Him, "You belong to your father the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies." 1 John 3:15

Matthew 5:38-48, Jesus says, "You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, tooth for tooth.' But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you."

"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect."

1John 4:16,18 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love… There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear".     See  2 Cor. 5:17.

Do you "murder", as the Lord knows it?   What ways can this be done?

Anger      Hate         Killing        Games

In most cases, if we are honest with ourselves, we can say, "Yes, I have murdered."

Anger,   Have you acted out of your anger in any way that has harmed someone?  Have you yelled loudly at that person? Have you acted violently, throwing something or physically striking another person?   Have you threatened to do wrong to someone? Have you emotionally or physically abused someone?   Has your attitude harmed another person purposefully? Do you feel envy or jealousy toward someone?  Do you to feel resentment and bitterness toward them?  Have you acted out of rage?

Have you said words or used a tone in your voice that you knew would hurt another person? Have you called someone bad names, or degraded their character with your words? Have you spoken lies about someone behind their back? Have you made up stories about someone so that their good reputation would be harmed? Have you tried controlling someone by your words and actions and succeeded in keeping them from doing good or crushing their spirit?

Hate, Have you acted harmfully against another person in your words, actions or attitudes? Have you harbored harm for another person in your thoughts? Have you been consumed by the idea of wanting harm for someone?

Killing, Have you actually killed someone out of anger or hatred?  Have you ignored someone else's needs which caused their death? Have you neglected your own duties and responsibilities at the cost of someone else's life?  Have you ever killed, or been there when an unborn child was being killed?

Games, When you play sports or video games, do you "get into them" so much that you think of killing in your imagination?  Do you play the "kill the bad guy" in your thoughts long after the game is ended?  Love your enemies, Matthew 5:43-48

Notes from the Word of God

Jeremiah 17:9     The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?  ~Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts…" Col 3:15 ; See 2 Cor 5:17 )

Matthew 15:18     Jesus says, "But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean'. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what make a man 'unclean'."

Proverbs 6:16     There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to Him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.

Proverb 26:28     A lying tongue hates those it hurts, and a flattering mouth works ruin.  See Psalm 12

John 14:6     Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know Him and have seen Him."   See 2 Cor 5:17

Commandment VII.

You shall not commit adultery.

"Commit" means to do or perform. According to God, "Adultery" means sexual relations of a married person with anyone other than the marriage partner, or just looking at someone with lust (a desire to satisfy physical pleasure, appetite, 1John 2:16). God tells us much in detail about adultery.

Lust          Adultery        Remedy

Lust, Matthew 5:27-30 Jesus says, "You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery. But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it our and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut if off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

Adultery, Matthew 5:30-32 Jesus says, "It has been said, 'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce. But I tell you tat anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.

Remedy,     John 8:1-11 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At dawn He appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around Him, and He sat down to teach them. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing Him.

But Jesus bent down an started to write on the ground with His finger. When they kept on questioning Him, He straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her. "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you." Jesus declared. "Go now and leave you life of sin."

Editor's note: Jesus had no sin. Jesus was the only one able to condemn the woman.  While Jesus did condemn her sin of adultery and lust, He gave her protection from sinful men, and gave He her a chance to live according to His Word, "Go now and leave you life of sin." -- What do you chose to do?

Do you commit "adultery", as the Lord knows it?   What ways can this be done?

Lust                Adultery        Remedy

In most cases, if we are honest with ourselves, we can say, "Yes, I have committed adultery."

Lust  Have you looked at anyone wishing to do something with his or her body?  Have you seen pictures of anyone and thought immoral (wrong according to God's standards) thoughts about them?  Have you played in your mind impure actions?

Adultery  Have you ever been with anyone sexually other than the one to whom you are married?  Have you ever had sexual relations outside of the covenant of marriage?
